Signs the Water Left Something Behind

Concrete block walls, tile floors and no basements mean water spreads sideways here instead of draining away. It runs under baseboards, into cabinet kickplates and across the slab, then wicks up into the drywall, where the humidity keeps it going.
The April 2023 rainstorm that dropped more than two feet of water on parts of the city in a day is the extreme version. A slow condensate line drip behind an air handler closet does the same damage quietly over months.

Removing what cannot dry
Wet insulation, carpet pad, cabinet board and saturated drywall come out. Solid wood, tile and block can often be dried and cleaned in place.

Insurance, Rebuilding and Next Steps
Document everything before anything is thrown away. Photograph the source, the damage and the affected rooms, keep a note of dates, and hold on to the readings and the written scope. Nobody can promise you how a claim will be handled, and no honest company will try.
Rebuilding is separate from cleanup. Once the wet material is out, someone has to put back drywall, trim, flooring and cabinets. Agree who that is in advance so you are not left with an open wall and two companies pointing at each other.

How quickly does mold grow after a leak?
In a warm, humid building, growth on wet drywall or carpet pad can start within a day or two. That is why the drying matters more than the cleaning, and why a room that was mopped up but never dried often smells musty a week later.
The carpet dried on its own. Is that enough?
Usually not. Carpet dries on top long before the pad and the subfloor underneath do, and the baseboard and bottom of the drywall hold water as well. A meter reading answers this in a minute.
Is standing water safe to walk through?
Keep out of standing water near outlets, cords or panels, and treat any water that has been in contact with a sewer line as a biohazard. Wear gloves, and do not run the air conditioning if dirty water has reached the ducts or the air handler.
